Lanzarote: The highlight of the Canary Islands

Lanzarote is probably the most popular of the Canary Islands for british tourists and for good reason, with four hour flights, tax-free prices and the neighbouring African climate you’re bound to get the beach holiday that you’re after but there’s also many more.

Whilst other islands like Tenerife and Gran Canaria have adopted a fully tourist atmosphere Lanzarote still maintains a decent level of Canarian culture that many tourists will seek out. The island’s main industry is now obviously tourism but for a long time this volcanic island was a great agricultural resource with Potatoes, Spinach and Onions being their main exports as well as wine producing regions such as La Geria.

For those who are seeking the beach holiday without having to fight for sun lounging space the island of Lanzarote is home to over 90 beaches and if you want your slice of paradise without the crowds then there are plenty of them situated away form the main resorts.

This need for tourists to have quiet getaways has seen a surge of rural hotels crop up away from the main resorts and with prices of around 100 Euros per room per night the dream of having a relaxing stay without all the crowds is fully affordable.

The island isn’t void of entertainment either with many classical concerts being put on throughout the year and one of the performance locations is actually at a cave, at Cueva de los Verdes. Surfing lessons are popular at many of the beaches and they can cater for absolute beginners to seasoned pros.

Puerto del Carmen is one of the most popular destinations in Lanzarote, divided into the New Town and Old Town sections. New Town features numerous restaurants, bars, shops, timeshare rental resorts and hotels. The Avenida de Playas, as this part of Playa del Carmen is called, also boasts an exciting nightlife with timeshare resorts and clubs remaining open until the sun rises. In contrast the Old Town, Playa del Carmen is home to less frequented restaurants with outdoor patios which are a treat since they offer great views of the harbour and the island of Fuerteventura in the distance.

The caves at Cueva de los Verdes are one of the many fascinating formations on Lanzarote with it being a volcanic island, but don’t worry the last eruptions were in the 17th and 19th centuries but due to the dry climate the natural landscape and rock formations are almost identical to what they were when the eruption last took place. Many areas of Lanzarote have been described as “other worldly” and with a low rainfall and high year round temperatures it makes Lanzarote the perfect holiday destination all year round making it more flexible for if you find that flights are cheaper outside of the typical holiday season.

With the Canary Islands being as popular as holidays in Spain and the Mediterranean there are plenty of cheap flights to Lanzarote still available and hotel prices are also very attractive for families who are looking for places to stay at for their week or two in the sun.
