Lanzarote Museums

It is surprising to know that there are large numbers of museums for a small island like Lanzarote. They fall under various categories. Many of these museums follow the conventional way and hold exhibits, gift shops and displays. There are other museums that offer insights into the various aspects of the island life.

Castillo San Jose

This is a contemporary international art museum in Arrecife. It is a small museum but it has the best collection of modern paintings and sculptures created by leading artists. This museum is an 18th century castle built in 1730’s. The Castillo was initially built to repel the pirates. It was also used to alleviate poverty that had struck during the volcanic eruptions of the 1730’s. It is also known as Fortress of Hunger. Today the Castillo houses a restaurant stylishly designed by Cesar Manrique.

Palacio Spinola

This is a beautiful house museum located in Teguise. It was built in the 1730’s; it offers an insight into the lifestyle of wealthy merchants and architecture of that period. Its restoration project was overseen by Cesar Manrique and it was restored back to its full glory in the 1970’s. Today it is considered as one of the most important monuments of Teguise.
